An IPTV Middleware system is the most important element of an IPTV headend. It connects all IPTV services with IP set-top boxes and provides graphical user interface for the latter.

The NetUP IPTV Middleware server supports several types of client software and hardware. Subscribers can access IPTV services on their PCs using IPTV PC Client (IPTV player). The other way to access IPTV is using IP set-top boxes for TV sets. Since the 1.7 version Middleware supports two types of IP set-top boxes: classical IP STBs (produced by Amino, TeleTec, Intercross and others) and Android-based IP set-top boxes.

The IPTV Middleware is built on NetUP Business Server framework and interacts with user's devices and software and also with elements of the IPTV cluster: billing system, conditional access system and others.

The client part of NetUP IPTV Middleware is constantly evolving. There are three generations of Middleware clients available so far. The first one is IP STB with Web-based graphical interface. The second generation is the low-level software which provides native GUI on IP set-top box. Second generation of Middleware - low-level STB Client

First generation of Middleware, Web interface

The first-generation graphical user interface was based on Web technologies. The Web-browser in IP STB displayed the web page generated by Middleware server. The IP STB worked in "passive" mode, the only it's function was to send requests to Middleware server and to receive new web page. The resources of IP STB's hardware were not fully utilized. Just HTML and JavaScript were used for server and client sides interaction.

It should be noticed that listed tools cannot be fully utilized due to IP STB's specialties. The imposed restrictions are hard to avoid if not impossible. All software functionality using in graphical interface was processed at the server end. This approach slowed down all the Middleware system especially in HD mode.

Support of first-generation IPTV Middleware is completely stopped at the moment.

The NetUP CDN server is a part of the NetUP OTT solution responsible for distributing Internet TV streams among end users. CDN servers are usually placed in datacenters because they require a high-speed Internet connection.
The main function of the CDN server is to receive streams from transcoding equipment (one stream per TV channel) and distribute (copy) them among end users (one stream per user). Another important feature is stream protection against unauthorized use.
A TV channel URL at the CDN server is protected with one-time session key (ticket), so copying and re-using the URL becomes impossible. Authorized end-user devices get valid tickets from the NetUP IPTV middleware system.

Creating own channel stream is an important task for telcos that provide TV services in their networks. Privately held channels can be either information ones, bringing news about the new services to users, or commercial ones, i.e. provided via prepaid subscription. Such channels can show movies, series, or any other content to subscribers.

Delayed TV program viewing can be considered the most demanding among all interactive TV services. Only IPTV technology provides a user with a possibility to pause or rewind TV programs. Such service is referred to as Time-Shifted TV. In addition, TV on Demand service is intended for viewing recent TV programs by choosing the TV program from the archive.

A TV channel received from a satellite or a broadcasting station is recorded on the server. On browsing the recorded media content on IP set-top boxes, information about the TV program start time is displayed. This information is provided to the system either manually or automatically from EPG. Browsing the recorded TV programs can be done using the program start markers or by simply choosing an arbitrary date and time.

TV on Demand and Time-Shifted TV services are implemented in the same server. The device is identical to the VOD server, includes 4 hot-swappable SATA-II HDD's, 1 TB each. That corresponds to approximately 2000 hours of recorded TV programs. It is possible to connect several TVoD servers into a cluster to provide the TVoD service in distributed networks.

The Conditional Access plug-in allows encrypting the output streams on the fly to protect media content from unauthorized access.

NetUP's Video on Demand server is built on an industry-standard platform and supports over 100 concurrent streams (1000 subscribers at normal VoD peak take-up rate) at typical MPEG-2 compression rate of 4 Mb/s per stream. Both unicast and multicast streaming modes are supported.

Server storage comprises four hot-swap SATA-II hard disks, 1 TB each. The total HDD space in the standard configuration is 4 Tbytes or more than 1000 movies in DVD quality. External data storage can be connected where required.

Movies are stored in MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), transport stream - both SD and HD are supported. Compression rate can be modified to match set-top box and/or downstream network performance. Video content can be loaded via smb or ftp.

Movie descriptions, displayed in the Middleware user interface, can be synchronized with a central database on the Internet (Media Knowledge Base, www.media-kb.com). The database contains the full and structured information on multimedia content, is multilingual and freely accessible.

The server is implemented in a 1U rack-mount case. It is possible to connect VoD servers into a cluster. This allows our customers to achieve almost any performance and provide VoD in distributed networks.

Using NetUP's CAS allows to stream already encrypted media content from the VOD server.

Time Shifted TV, Network Personal Video Recorder, and TV on Demand are implemented as a separate server based on the same framework.

New content distribution system

Starting from 1.7, the NetUP VoD software includes a new content distribution system. Video content may be uploaded to the VoD server in any supported format. Afterwards, the content is automatically converted into the internal format to be later distributed throughout other VoD servers in the cluster.

An intelligent storage system keeps media files in fragments spread between different servers, thus avoiding the unnecessary overhead of duplicating every file on all VoD servers in the cluster.

The NetUP Transcoder Card can be installed in the standard NetUP Streamer 8x chassis which is a 1U rack-mount device. Four Transcoders installed in the Streamer can process 8 HD (up to 1080i) or 16 SD streams. Here processing means encoding into MPEG-2 or H.264, transcoding from MPEG-2 to H.264 or vice versa, changing pircture resolution, frame rate, etc. The output can be sent to the network as multicast (UDP) or unicast (HTTP) streams.
